From the Parks to the High Seas — Disney Destiny Spring Break Recap (Part 2 of 2)

If you missed Part 1, my daughter and I spent several days at Walt Disney World this Spring Break with a fractured elbow, afternoon storms, pink ponchos, and all. It was imperfect and wonderful in equal measure. And then we boarded a train and headed straight for something brand new.

After checking out of Saratoga Springs, we took the Brightline train from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale. Clean, comfortable, easy to navigate even with luggage, and honestly a really enjoyable way to travel between cities. If you're combining a Walt Disney World stay with a Port Everglades departure, I'd recommend it without hesitation.

The Weather Followed Us

I'll be honest…. the same weather front that chased us through Walt Disney World had no intention of letting us go.

Our first night sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, the waves were rough enough that my daughter skipped the main dining room entirely and spent the evening watching a movie in our stateroom. As a mom, you just read the moment. Sometimes the best thing you can do is order room service, let your teen decompress, and call it a gentle start to the sailing.

Both of our port days brought their own challenges too. At Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, it was cool, windy, and the beach was under a black flag, with meant we couldn't enter the water at all for safety reasons. We spent a short time ashore and headed back to the ship to catch the matinee showing of Frozen.

Castaway Cay was much the same, cooler temperatures and wind that made a beach day less appealing. We made the call to stay onboard, which turned out to be one of the better decisions of the trip. The ship was quiet. The pool deck was calm. We did activities we would have otherwise missed.

I do want to say this clearly for anyone reading: if it's your first time visiting Castaway Cay, I would not recommend skipping your port day there under normal circumstances. It is a beautiful island and a genuinely special Disney experience. Our situation was weather-specific, and even then, staying onboard the Destiny on a quiet day wasn't exactly a hardship.

The Disney Destiny Herself

Let's talk about this ship... because she deserves it.

The Grand Hall on the Disney Destiny might be my new favorite at sea. It's dramatic and unexpected and immediately pulls you in. Throughout the cruise it serves as the heartbeat of the ship with music, light shows, and a stunning chandelier that transforms depending on the moment. It never gets old.

What makes the Destiny feel truly distinct is her story. The entire ship plays with the theme of heroes versus villains... and the idea that we each have our own story unfolding. It's clever, it's immersive, and it's woven into every corner of the experience rather than feeling like a decorative afterthought.

The villains here are the stars and they commit to it fully. Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, and Dr. Facilier all have a commanding presence onboard, and their shows and experiences are not to be missed.

The Dr. Facilier Parlor — A Few Things to Know

This was one of the most talked-about experiences onboard, and I want to give you an honest preview so you know what to expect.

No cameras or video are allowed inside for any member of your group. That's part of what makes it feel exclusive and genuinely in-the-moment.

Dr. Facilier plays his role beautifully. He is smooth, charismatic, and fully committed to being the Shadow Man from the moment you walk in. For teens and adults who love a little theatrical suspense, it's fantastic.

A note for families with younger children: this experience is not adults-only, but little ones may find it frightening. Dr. Facilier does not break character, and the atmosphere is intentionally mysterious and a little unsettling. Know your audience before you reserve a time.

The Stage Shows — Broadway Belongs at Sea

If you are a Broadway lover, a musical theater fan, or honestly just someone who appreciates talent... do not miss the stage shows on the Disney Destiny!

Frozen and Hercules are both onboard, and both are extraordinary. The production quality, the performers, the energy in that theater, it genuinely rivals what you'd experience in a professional stage production. My daughter and I were both completely captivated, and I don't say that lightly.

Block out time for both shows. You will not regret it.

The Small Thing Everyone Loves

Every day on the Destiny features a new soft serve ice cream flavor available as a snack.

It sounds simple. It becomes a daily ritual. Everyone in your group will start looking forward to it, and it's one of those little touches that makes the cruise feel festive and fun from morning to night. Don't skip it, and just say “yes.”

What This Trip Taught Me As a Travel Advisor and as a Mom

Between the fractured elbow at Walt Disney World and the rough seas on the Destiny, this Spring Break was not the trip I planned on paper.

And yet... it gave me something I didn't know I needed.

It reminded me that the value of a well-planned trip isn't that nothing goes wrong. It's that when something does, you have the foundation to pivot gracefully. The right resorts. The right ship. The right mindset going in.

It also reminded me what it feels like to be the traveler, not just the advisor. To make real-time decisions with imperfect information, to release expectations and follow the trip where it wants to go, and to find the magic anyway.

Is the Disney Destiny on Your List?

If you're considering a Disney Cruise Line sailing and the Destiny has caught your eye, I would love to help you think through it. From choosing the right itinerary to knowing what to reserve before you board, there's a lot that goes into making a DCL sailing feel seamless, especially on a brand new ship that everyone is still discovering together.

Let's start planning your adventure. I have a few thoughts on what I'd do differently next time... and I'd love to share them with you.
