Disney Magic Around the World: A Guide to International Disney Parks
If you think Disney magic begins and ends in Florida or California, I have a feeling this blog is going to open up an entirely new chapter of your travel wishlist.
One of the things I love most about being a travel advisor who specializes in Disney is that the conversation never really stops growing. Families start with Walt Disney World. Then they discover Disney Cruise Line. Then someone mentions Disneyland Paris and suddenly we're mapping out a whole new kind of adventure together.
Here's something that genuinely excites me, both as an advisor and as a traveler: there are 12 Disney parks across 6 destinations around the world, each one telling Disney stories through its own cultural lens. I haven't experienced them all personally yet, but visiting every single one is absolutely on my bucket list. And in the meantime, helping clients pair these parks with international itineraries in ways that feel seamless and special is one of my favorite things to do.
If you've ever wondered what Disney looks like beyond American borders, let's explore.
The International Disney Parks at a Glance
Outside the United States, there are four Disney resort destinations worth knowing:
Disneyland Paris in France, Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in China, and Shanghai Disney Resort, also in China.
Each one offers something genuinely different. Choosing the right fit comes down to your travel style, who you're traveling with, and how Disney fits into the larger trip you're building.
Disneyland Paris
For most families dreaming of an international Disney experience, Disneyland Paris is the natural starting point, and for good reason.
Located just outside the city on a fast train connection, it's one of the easiest Disney parks in the world to add onto an existing Europe itinerary. Already planning Paris? A day or two at Disneyland Paris slots in beautifully without requiring a separate trip.
What makes this park special is how it blends classic Disney nostalgia with European elegance. Many travelers consider it one of the most beautifully designed castle parks in the world. The Fantasyland area in particular has a storybook atmosphere that feels incredibly immersive, and the details throughout the park reward slow exploration.
A few things worth knowing: Big Thunder Mountain here has an island, and Space Mountain goes upside down. Familiar rides, but with their own distinct personality. And Sleeping Beauty Castle actually has a dragon underneath it, which is exactly as dramatic as it sounds.
For families who want both the magic of Paris and a Disney day woven into one trip, this park delivers on both.
Tokyo Disney Resort
Tokyo Disney Resort is widely considered the gold standard of Disney destinations worldwide, and the more you learn about it, the easier it is to understand why.
The resort is home to two full parks: Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. The level of care, cleanliness, entertainment, and service at both parks sets a bar that is genuinely remarkable. Guests who visit consistently describe it as the most immersive and well-executed Disney experience they've ever had.
But Tokyo DisneySea is the one that lives on bucket lists. It is unlike anything else in the Disney portfolio anywhere in the world. Built around a nautical exploration theme with seven distinct "ports of call," the park combines stunning architecture, world-class attractions, and a level of storytelling sophistication that appeals to adults and kids in equal measure. It's the park I personally cannot wait to experience.
If Japan is on your travel radar, Tokyo Disney Resort is not a side trip. It's a destination in itself.
Shanghai Disney Resort
Shanghai Disneyland feels like a glimpse into the future of what Disney parks can be.
Designed with newer technology, large-scale attractions, and expansive gardens, this park is bold and forward-looking in a way that sets it apart from every other Disney destination. The castle here is unlike any other Disney castle in the world, larger, more elaborate, and architecturally stunning from every angle.
For thrill seekers and travelers who appreciate innovation alongside the familiar magic of Disney storytelling, Shanghai delivers in a big way. It strikes a balance between the nostalgia of classic Disney and the excitement of what comes next, which makes it a fascinating park for Disney fans who feel like they've seen it all.
Paired with a broader China itinerary, it's an experience that adds genuine depth and surprise to an international trip.
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
Hong Kong Disneyland is the smallest of the international parks, and that's actually one of its most appealing qualities.
It's approachable, easier to navigate, and perfectly suited for families with younger children or travelers who want a Disney experience without committing to a large multi-day resort stay. The pace here is more relaxed, and the scale makes it far less overwhelming than its larger counterparts.
It's also home to Mystic Manor, one of the most creative and beloved attractions in any Disney park worldwide. If you're familiar with the Haunted Mansion, Mystic Manor takes that concept and reimagines it in a completely fresh and delightful direction. It's worth the trip on its own for Disney enthusiasts.
Newer immersive lands like World of Frozen add a contemporary layer to the park's charm, and the scenic setting makes it a lovely addition to any Hong Kong or broader Asia itinerary.
What Makes Disney Abroad So Special
Each of these parks takes the same storytelling foundation you already know and love and reimagines it through the culture, aesthetics, and guest expectations of where it lives in the world. The heart of Disney stays constant. But the way it's expressed feels entirely new.
That's what makes international Disney parks so fascinating to explore. You might step onto a familiar attraction or spot a beloved character, but the context around them shifts in ways that feel surprising and wonderful. For families who already love Disney World, an international park can feel like falling in love with the magic all over again. And for travelers who have never thought of themselves as Disney people, these destinations have a way of changing that.
Your next Disney adventure might be waiting across the ocean.
